LOWBROW GOES ON – ATTILA STARK

The influences of two subcultures, that have since gained a degree of artistic prestige, have had a formative impact on Attila STARK’s work. One is street art, which spread in Hungary around the millennium. STARK and the collective of street artists he established with his university friends, dubbed 1000%, played a pioneering role in popularizing the genre. The other is comics, which gained momentum in Hungary around 2005 and paved the way for the publication of many of STARK’s works, in the pages of the magazine Roham and in his own books. These two genres have only reinforced and enriched his perspective as a graphic designer, a vision he has successfully adapted to his paintings, too. His works are characterized by bold lines, and when it comes to non-monochrome creations, he uses strong colors, most often applying them to his canvases in layers using various techniques. For a long time, urban lifestyle was his central theme, but over time he has become increasingly inspired by the natural environment and wildlife, which he observes with scientific thoroughness. His portfolio is a true multicultural cabinet of curiosities. Instead of framed comics, he is now attracted to fanzines and illustrations, and after ink drawings, he is interested in the possibilities of screen printing and risograph prints. In Hungary, we encounter his designs for books, album covers, canvas bags and T-shirts on a daily basis. His festival posters and printed materials bring color to cultural events in Czechia, North Macedonia, France, Serbia, Slovakia, and Sweden, too.
