LOWBROW GOES ON – KATALIN SÁRDI

Animation director Katalin SÁRDI’s journey began in childhood with her love of Japanese anime, the Cartoon Network and comic books. In her fanzines, or more precisely, her minizines, she recreated classic fairy tales (e.g., Hansel and Gretel, Sleeping Beauty) and even created her own league of superheroes, the Suspenders Sisters, whose adventures can now be followed in animated form. With virtuoso craft, she makes densely arranged illustrations and fan art versions of her favorite pop culture themes. She captures the most important features of the originals, but they become unmistakable SÁRDI creations with their sharply composed forms and vibrant colors. The source of this expressive, neon-lit aesthetic is the artist’s favorite era, the 1980s, which is constantly reflected in her graphics, especially in her diploma project, Glasshouse, which was named Best Animated Film at the latest Friss Hús Budapest International Short Film Festival.
