LOWBROW GOES ON – ÁGNES GAZDAG

Ágnes GAZDAG is not only inspired by the work of great artists (Rubens, Rembrandt, Goya), but also continues their creative traditions with the detail and meticulous execution of her decorative paintings. Her small mammals are presented in theatrical scenes, dressed in elegant costumes, often paraphrasing specific masterpieces, leaving the viewer uncertain as to whether she is paying homage to or rather making fun of previously unquestionable values.

Whether a portrait, a genre scene, or a religious or mythological theme, her works blend the distant past and contemporary pop culture in an ominous but highly entertaining way. The combination of cuteness and grotesque is only heightened by her portraits of novel subjects that feature fantastic hybrid animals and monsters. In fact, these are the subjects of the artist’s latest experiment, stepping out of the canvas and into space, formed of a pairing of the least natural and most natural materials. The small sculptures made of silicone resin, human hair or animal fur may startle visitors or put a smile on their face.
