Drew Matott is an American papermaker with expertise in traditional papermaking as a form of global social engagement and community activism. He has dedicated a significant portion of his career to using art for healing and social change, particularly in the areas of trauma and mental health.
He currently lives in Hamburg, Germany, where he teaches and commissions in his workshop, in addition to organizing the Peace Paper Project’s new papermaking endeavors.
In 2019, he received the American Art Therapy Association’s Rudolph Arnheim Award, which is given to an individual outside of the association whose contributions have significantly influenced the art therapy profession. In 2024, he published a book summarizing his experiences, The Art and Art Therapy of Papermaking, co-authored with Grethen M. Miller.
Drew presents a papermaking workshop he conducts for individuals seeking healing. It guides you through the processing of textiles with simple techniques, which are pieces of clothing that carry memories and connect with the participants, whether it is their difficulties or areas for personal development. The participants draw paper from the raw material thus prepared, and then use a special technique to blow images onto their surface.
